Idol

 
  • Exodus 20:4 — "You shall not make for yourself (Or {a graven image}) an idol, or any likeness of what is in heaven above or on the earth beneath or in the water under the earth.
  • Deuteronomy 4:23 — ~"So watch yourselves, that you do not forget the covenant of the LORD your God which He made with you, and make for yourselves a graven image in the form of anything {against} which the LORD your God has commanded you.
  • 2 Kings 19:18 — and have cast their gods into the fire, for they were not gods but the work of men's hands, wood and stone. So they have destroyed them.
  • Psalms 115:4-8 — Their idols are silver and gold, The work of man's hands.
    They have mouths, but they cannot speak; They have eyes, but they cannot see;
    They have ears, but they cannot hear; They have noses, but they cannot smell;

    Those who make them will become like them, Everyone who trusts in them.
  • Isaiah 44:9-13 — Those who fashion a graven image are all of them futile, and their precious things are of no profit; even their own witnesses fail to see or know, so that they will be put to shame.
    Who has fashioned a god or cast an idol to no profit?
    Behold, all his companions will be put to shame, for the craftsmen themselves are mere men. Let them all assemble themselves, let them stand up, let them tremble, let them together be put to shame.
    The man shapes iron into a cutting tool and does his work over the coals, fashioning it with hammers and working it with his strong arm. He also gets hungry and his strength fails; he drinks no water and becomes weary.
    {Another} shapes wood, he extends a measuring line; he outlines it with red chalk. He works it with planes and outlines it with a compass, and makes it like the form of a man, like the beauty of man, so that it may sit in a house.
  • Isaiah 44:14-18 — Surely he cuts cedars for himself, and takes a cypress or an oak and raises {it} for himself among the trees of the forest. He plants a fir, and the rain makes it grow.
    Then it becomes {something} for a man to burn, so he takes one of them and warms himself; he also makes a fire to bake bread. He also makes a god and worships it; he makes it a graven image and falls down before it.
    Half of it he burns in the fire; over {this} half he eats meat as he roasts a roast and is satisfied. He also warms himself and says, "Aha! I am warm, I have seen the fire."
    But the rest of it he makes into a god, his graven image. He falls down before it and worships; he also prays to it and says, "Deliver me, for you are my god."
    They do not know, nor do they understand, for He has smeared over their eyes so that they cannot see and their hearts so that they cannot comprehend.
  • Isaiah 44:19-20 — No one recalls, nor is there knowledge or understanding to say, "I have burned half of it in the fire and also have baked bread over its coals. I roast meat and eat {it.} Then I make the rest of it into an abomination, I fall down before a block of wood!"
    He feeds on ashes; a deceived heart has turned him aside. And he cannot deliver himself, nor say, "Is there not a lie in my right hand?"
  • Habakkuk 2:18 — "What profit is the idol when its maker has carved it, {Or} an image, a teacher of falsehood? For {its} maker trusts in his {own} handiwork When he fashions speechless idols.
  • Acts 14:15 — and saying, "Men, why are you doing these things? We are also men of the same nature as you, and preach the gospel to you that you should turn from these (I.e. idols) vain things to a living God, WHO MADE THE HEAVEN AND THE EARTH AND THE SEA AND ALL THAT IS IN THEM.
  • Acts 17:22-25 — So Paul stood in the midst of the Areopagus and said, "Men of Athens, I observe that you are very religious in all respects.
    ~"For while I was passing through and examining the objects of your worship, I also found an altar with this inscription, `TO AN UNKNOWN GOD.' Therefore what you worship in ignorance, this I proclaim to you.
    ~"The God who made the world and all things in it, since He is Lord of heaven and earth, does not dwell in temples made with hands;
    nor is He served by human hands, as though He needed anything, since He Himself gives to all {people} life and breath and all things;
  • Acts 17:29-30 — ~"Being then the children of God, we ought not to think that the Divine Nature is like gold or silver or stone, an image formed by the art and thought of man.
    ~"Therefore having overlooked the times of ignorance, God is now declaring to men that all {people} everywhere should repent,
  • Romans 1:22-25 — Professing to be wise, they became fools,
    and exchanged the glory of the incorruptible God for an image in the form of corruptible man and of birds and four-footed animals and (Or {reptiles}) crawling creatures.
    Therefore God gave them over in the lusts of their hearts to impurity, so that their bodies would be dishonored among them.
    For they exchanged the truth of God for a lie, and worshiped and served the creature rather than the Creator, who is blessed forever. Amen.
  • 1 Corinthians 10:14 — Therefore, my beloved, flee from idolatry.
  • Galatians 4:8-9 — However at that time, when you did not know God, you were slaves to those which by nature are no gods.
    But now that you have come to know God, or rather to be known by God, how is it that you turn back again to the weak and worthless elemental things, to which you desire to be enslaved all over again?
  • 1 John 2:16-17 — For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh and the lust of the eyes and the boastful pride of life, is not from the Father, but is from the world.
    The world is passing away, and {also} its lusts; but the one who does the will of God lives forever.
  • 1 John 5:21 — Little children, guard yourselves from idols.
