OATH(S)
(See also CURSE; SWEARING; VOW)
An oath is a solemn vow or promise that includes a curse for breach of word or for failure to speak the truth (Numbers 5:21; Nehemiah 10:29; Daniel 9:11; Mark 14:71). In biblical usage, to take an oath means to swear (e.g., Genesis 50:24-25 marg.; Ecclesiastes 9:2 marg.; Hebrews 6:13-17; James 5:12). Sometimes God is invoked in an oath to bring the curse upon the disloyal or perjured person (Joshua 6:26).
