TEMPLE
(See
TABERNACLE)
Israel's temple was the permanent building and central place of their worship where God chose to dwell among His people (1 Kings 8:12-13; 2 Kings 23:27; 2 Chronicles 7:12; Matthew 23:21). Temples were common in the cities of the Near East, and each temple represented and was dedicated to a patron deity. Thus the temple was "the house" of its deity (e.g., "Dagon's house," 1 Samuel 5:5; cf. 1 Samuel 31:10). King David initiated the idea of building Israel's first temple to replace their portable tabernacle since Israel had become consolidated in the promised land under his rule (2 Samuel 7:1-3; 1 Chronicles 28:2). God approved David's plan but stipulated that Solomon his son should build the temple (2 Samuel 7:1-17; 1 Kings 8:15-20; 1 Chronicles 28:1-6). Construction of Solomon's temple began in his fourth year and was completed seven years later (967-960 B.C.) (1 Kings 6:37-38; 2 Chronicles 3:1-2). It was eventually destroyed along with the city of Jerusalem by the Babylonian army in 586 B.C. (2 Kings 25:8-10; Ezra 5:12). Another temple was built at Jerusalem by the returnees from captivity during the governorship of Zerubbabel (Ezra 3:8-12). This temple was begun on the original temple site in 536 B.C. and was completed in 516 B.C. The temple of Herod the Great was begun in 19 B.C., and the main building was completed in 9 B.C. However, further work continued until A.D. 64 (cf. John 2:20). This temple included magnificent and beautiful buildings as indicated by Jesus' own disciples (Mark 13:1). Herod's temple was demolished in A.D. 70 by the Roman general Titus just as Jesus had predicted (Matthew 24:21; Luke 21:21-24; cf. Hosea 3:4-5). While there were obvious differences in certain dimensions, materials, and details between the tabernacle and the temple, their general layout, furniture, and purpose were similar. Some of the main contents of the tabernacle (such as the ark of the covenant) were removed from the tabernacle and placed in the new temple (1 Kings 8:3-6, 21).
