The talent was used in both OT and NT times as a measure of weight (about 75 pounds) or money (Exodus 25:39; 2 Samuel 12:30; 1 Chronicles 22:14; Matthew 18:24). Christ included talents in His teaching to emphasize that His servants should be faithful and accountable in their use of divine entrustments (Matthew 25:14-30).
