SUBSTITUTION
(See OFFERINGS)

The biblical as well as the general sense of the term substitution is the use of a person or thing in place of another person or thing (e.g., Matthew 2:22; 5:38; Philemon 13). The principle of substitution is taught in the OT doctrine of atonement (Leviticus 16:15-22) and reaches its highest biblical significance in the sacrificial death of Christ for sinners (Isaiah 53:6; Mark 10:45; 2 Corinthians 5:21).

of sacrificial animals:

•   Genesis 22:2-13, esp. vv. 8, 13
♦ in atonement for the offerer(s):
•   Leviticus 1:4
♦ for another animal:
♦ related to an exchange
♦ in ethical matters
•   Isaiah 5:20
♦ in Christ's redemptive work
