SUBSTITUTION
(See OFFERINGS)
The biblical as well as the general sense of the term substitution is the use of a person or thing in place of another person or thing (e.g., Matthew 2:22; 5:38; Philemon 13). The principle of substitution is taught in the OT doctrine of atonement (Leviticus 16:15-22) and reaches its highest biblical significance in the sacrificial death of Christ for sinners (Isaiah 53:6; Mark 10:45; 2 Corinthians 5:21).
