ATONEMENT
(See also REDEMPTION; PROPITIATION; RECONCILIATION; SALVATION)

In OT usage the term atonement (Heb. root kaphar) indicates a ransom that is generally a sacrificial offering to God as a substitute for human sin (Leviticus 4:20; 16; 17:11). In its doctrinal sense atonement refers to the substitutionary death of Christ in providing salvation for sinful man (Matthew 20:28; 2 Corinthians 5:21; Ephesians 1:7; 1 Peter 2:24-25; 3:18). Christ's atonement accomplishes redemption, propitiation, and reconciliation in man's relation to God (Romans 3:24-26; 2 Corinthians 5:18-20; 2 Peter 2:1; 1 John 2:2).
