CONVERSION
(See FAITH, REPENTANCE, SALVATION)

The term conversion (from Hebrew and Greek words meaning "to turn back" or "return") signifies the act of a sinner in turning away from sin (e.g., 2 Chronicles 7:14; Acts 3:26) and toward God in repentance and faith (e.g., Deuteronomy 30:10; Acts 9:35). As such it is a comprehensive term for the human action in initial salvation and usually includes both repentance and faith. The Hebrew and Greek terms (which are also frequently used for a literal physical change of directions) denote a life change of direction that includes both the inward attitude and outward behavior. Conversion may also be applied to those who have known God and, having veered away, need to return to Him (cf. the many uses for the people of Israel in the OT e.g., Lamentations 5:21; and its use with Peter, Luke 22:32, cf. James 5:20).
