REMEMBRANCE

The term remembrance is used in Scripture of both active recall and also passive retention or memory (Psalms 119:55; Isaiah 64:5; Acts 20:31). God's perfect remembrance is especially significant in relation to His people and His covenant promises (Exodus 2:24-25) (see also GOD, attributes of, omniscient). Man is urged to recall God along with His words and wondrous works and to respond with a right relationship to Him (Deuteronomy 8:18; Psalms 111:4; Isaiah 43:26; Revelation 2:5). Remembrance may also be associated with a memorial, particularly for divine acts of redemption, intervention, and revelation (Exodus 12:14; 17:14; 28:12; Joshua 4:7; Esther 9:28; cf. Exodus 3:15; Psalms 135:13 marg.; Luke 22:19), or with a written record (Malachi 3:16, "book of remembrance").
