PROPITIATION
(See also ATONEMENT; mercy seat; SALVATION)

Propitiation means that Christ's redemptive sacrifice has satisfied God's holy wrath against human sin (Romans 1:18; Ephesians 2:3; 1 John 2:2 (cf. Isaiah 53:10-11). Consequently, God can justly show mercy to man and provide forgiveness of sins and a right standing with Himself for believers (Luke 18:13-14; Romans 3:24-26). The OT "mercy seat" served as a place of propitiation or "atonement" and typifies Christ's work of propitiation in the NT (Exodus 25:18-22; Leviticus 16:14-22; Hebrews 9:5-26).
