CHRIST

The term Christ (Gr. Christos) or Messiah (Heb. mashiach) means "Anointed One" (Psalms 2:2; Daniel 9:25-26; John 1:41; 4:25; cf. Psalms 45:7). The term Christ indicates the Son's official title (cf. Luke 4:18-19), while Jesus is His personal and human name (Matthew 1:21). However, the early church increasingly used Christ as part of His personal name (Acts 8:5; Romans 9:3, 5; 1 Corinthians 1:6-7, 13; Galatians 6:2; 2 Thessalonians 3:5; 2 John 9). OT prophecy presents Christ in the offices of prophet (Deuteronomy 18:15-19; cf. Luke 4:24; Acts 3:22-23), priest (Psalms 110:4; cf. Hebrews 5:5-6), and king (2 Samuel 7:12-13; Psalms 2:2; cf. Matthew 2:2; John 18:37), and includes representative examples of men anointed with oil to function in these same offices (Exodus 19:7; 1 Samuel 16:13; 1 Kings 19:16). Likewise, Christ was anointed by the Spirit in preparation for His public ministry (Isaiah 11:2-5; Luke 4:18-19; Acts 4:27; 10:38; cf. Hebrews 1:9). The title Christ mainly emphasizes His office as King and His future worldwide rulership as David's divine descendant (2 Samuel 7:12-13; Psalms 110:1; Daniel 7:13-14; Zechariah 9:9; Matthew 1:1; 21:5; 26:63-64; Luke 1:31-33; Revelation 5:5). The titles Son of David and Son of Man are both closely associated with His role as the Christ (i.e., Messiah) (Matthew 20:30-31; 21:9, 15; 26:63-64).
