GOD
(See LORD)

The various forms of the OT term for God most likely connote the meaning "mighty One" (see below, GOD, names of). "God" is used (1) of the true God (Jeremiah 10:10; 1 John 5:20), (2) of heathen gods in the OT (Genesis 35:2; Exodus 12:12) and in the NT (1 Corinthians 8:5; Galatians 4:8), and (3) of "the mighty" in the OT with reference to men or angels (e.g., Psalms 8:5 marg.; cf. Hebrews 2:7; Psalms 82:6; 97:7; Ezekiel 32:21). Particular usage is almost invariably clear from the biblical context. In a doctrinal sense, God is a perfect and personal spirit who is infinite, eternal and unchangeable in His being and attributes (Deuteronomy 32:4; Psalms 145:17; 147:5; John 4:24; 1 Timothy 6:15-16). He is unique as the "living and true God" (I Thessalonians 1:9; cf. Jeremiah 10:10; John 17:3; Acts 14:15) who alone is the transcendent Creator and Governor of the universe and man (Genesis 1-2; Deuteronomy 32:39-40; Isaiah 45:5-7, 9-13, 18-22; Revelation 4:1-5:14). His personality, perfect attributes, and dynamic activity absolutely contrast Him with all unscriptural conceptions of deity, particularly man-made idols that are dead, dumb, and impotent (Deuteronomy 4:28; Isaiah 46:1-11; John 5:17; Acts 17:24-29). He has revealed Himself through natural evidences (Romans 1:19-20; 2:15) and primarily through Scripture and through His Son, in whom He has also provided redemption for man (Romans 3:21-26; Hebrews 1:1-3; 2 Timothy 3:15-17; cf. John 1:14; 14:9). The general name "God" is often joined with His personal name "LORD" (e.g., Genesis 2:4-5; Exodus 34:23; Psalms 68:18).
