APOSTLE
(See DISCIPLESHIP)

An apostle (Gr. apostolos) is one sent forth as an authorized representative accountable to the sender. The NT apostles were appointed and sent forth by Christ on a specified mission and with His authority (Matthew 10:1-14; 16:19; 28:18-20; John 15:16; 20:21-23; Acts 1:8; 9:1-22; 10:41-42). Their mission mainly consisted of evangelizing, discipling converts, training leaders, and establishing and administering local churches (e.g., Acts 2:14-28:31). The word for apostles is also used in a general, unofficial sense of "messengers" (2 Corinthians 8:23; Philippians 2:25).
