CLEAN, CLEANNESS
(See also HOLINESS; PURIFICATION; SANCTIFICATION)

Scripture uses the terms clean and cleanness in a physical, ceremonial, or moral sense (or in some combination of these senses) to indicate purification from filth, defilement, or sin (Leviticus 11:44-47; Psalms 51:7, 10; Proverbs 14:4; Ezekiel 24:13; John 13:10-11; 1 John 1:7). The NT abrogates the religious need for outward and ritual cleanness (Mark 7:6-23; Luke 11:41; Acts 10:1-16; 1 Timothy 4:3-5) and emphasizes the believer's inward and spiritual cleansing from sin through Christ's blood (Matthew 26:28; Romans 3:24-25; Colossians 2:13). Spiritual cleanness is maintained by obedience to the word of God (Psalms 119:9-11; John 17:17) and restored by confession of sin (Psalms 51; 1 John 1:7-9).
