SON OF GOD
(See CHRIST; SON OF MAN)

The title Son of God indicates both Jesus' messianic purpose and also His deity as uniquely related to His Father (Luke 1:31-35). It is applied to Him: (1) by the Father at His baptism (Matthew 3:17) and again at His transfiguration (Matthew 17:5); (2) in Peter's confession (Matthew 16:16); (3) by the centurion (Matthew 27:54) and (4) by the demons (Mark 5:7). He is the Son of God in the sense of God the Son (cf. John 1:18). Christ used this name of Himself (John 10:36) but not as extensively as "Son of man."
