Your Thoughts
Expected time: 4 sessions of 15 minutes (except for memorization). Check each item when completed.
- Pray about this lesson. (Allow God to do beyond your capabilities in this lesson.)
- Read Romans 7:21 - 8:7. Describe the battle for control of our thoughts.
- Memorize Philippians 4:8. Notes on memorization:
- It is difficult to succeed in any fundamental area of living without memorizing a verse on it.
- Always memorize in one translation.
- Always memorize word-for-word.
- When saying, always say the verse reference, then the verse itself, then the reference again.
- Memorize during "brainless" activities, like driving, standing in line, during commercials, ...
- Regularly review verses previously memorized.
- Read as many of the following as time permits, answering the questions below.
- What does God tell us to think about?
- The GIGO (Garbage In, Garbage Out) concept says that what goes into our mind, e.g. from TV, comes out, e.g. in our speech. Is this a valid concept? Can we prevent Garbage In from being Garbage Out? How much of what comes out is a result of what went in? What is your "food for thought"?
- What does Satan do to prevent people from thinking the thoughts they should? How does understanding this, and the GIGO concept, help us to understand why people believe or act the way they do (in addition to the sin nature in each person) ?
- What can we do to think the thoughts we should?
- From the above, determine something of which you need to change. One way to encourage success in this area is to say the memorized verse when struggling with what to do. What one other thing can you be doing to improve in this area?
