Idols

Expected time: 3 sessions of 10 minutes (except for memorization). Check each item when completed.

  1. Pray about this lesson. (Allow God to do beyond your capabilities in this lesson.)
  2.

  3. Read Romans 1:22-25. It talks about exchanging the truth of God for a lie. How can this happen? How can this happen today to Christians?
  4.

  5. Memorize I John 2:16. Notes on memorization:
  6.

    • It is difficult to succeed in any fundamental area of living without memorizing a verse on it.
    • Always memorize in one translation.
    • Always memorize word-for-word.
    • When saying, always say the verse reference, then the verse itself, then the reference again.
    • Memorize during "brainless" activities, like driving, standing in line, during commercials, ...
    • Regularly review verses previously memorized.

  7. Read as many of the following as time permits (read at least 4), answering the questions below.
  8.  Exodus 20:4Deuteronomy 4:232 Kings 19:18Psalms 115:4-8
     Isaiah 44:9-20Habakkuk 2:18Acts 14:15Acts 17:22-25
     Acts 17:29-30Romans 1:22-251 Corinthians 10:14Galatians 4:8-9
     1 John 2:16-171 John 5:21

  9. Describe modern idols. In what ways do they compare to the idols desribed in these passages?
  10.

  11. How can we be deceived and fall into the trap of following idols?
  12.

  13. List other information about idolatry, and how we can avoid it.
  14.

  15. From the above, determine something of which you need to change. One way to encourage success in this area is to say the memorized verse when struggling. What one other thing can you do this week to improve in this area?
  16.
