Forgiveness

Expected time: 3 sessions of 15 minutes (except for memorization). Check each item when completed.

  1. Pray about this lesson. (Allow God to do beyond your capabilities in this lesson.)
  2.

  3. Read Philemon (the entire book, only 25 verses). Draw the analogy between Philemon, Paul, and Onesimus, and God, Christ, and ourselves. How does this bring to light the words of Matt. 6:12?

  4. Memorize Romans 12:21. Notes on memorization:
  5.

    • It is difficult to succeed in any fundamental area of living without memorizing a verse on it.
    • Always memorize in one translation.
    • Always memorize word-for-word.
    • When saying, always say the verse reference, then the verse itself, then the reference again.
    • Memorize during "brainless" activities, like driving, standing in line, during commercials, ...
    • Regularly review verses previously memorized.

  6. Read as many of the following as time permits (read at least 4), answering the questions below.

     Ephesians 4:32Colossians 3:12-13Philemon 1:10-121 Peter 3:8-9

  8. Describe God's forgiveness. Describe what He asks us to do regarding forgiving others.
  9.

  10. Is there (or was there) someone you could not forgive? Why? Should you forgive them? Can you forgive them? Are there situations where a person cannot be forgiven?

  11. Is there anyone God cannot forgive? Practically, how can we get to the point where we can forgive like God forgives?
  12.

  13. From the above, determine something of which you need to change. One way to encourage success in this area is to say the memorized verse when struggling with what to do. What one other thing can you be doing to improve in this area?
  14.
