What Does the Bible Say?

What does "Lord" mean?

by Scott Basham, BibleSteak Contributor

The title "Lord Jesus" is mentioned over 100 times in the New Testament. What does it take to make Christ the Lord of our lives?

Let's look at what a lord is, from the medieval perspective. They were respected, and obedience was never really in question. At least, not for those who claimed to belong to the lord and king. They obeyed because that is all they knew - obedience was part of the honor of a knight, and because disobedience had such strong repercussions (civil punishment and social alienation).

It also reminds me of the first season of the TV show Survivor. Out of the final four people, there were 2 men, the eventual winner (Rich) and the older former Navy Seal (Rudy). They had made a pact in the beginning that they would stick together. When there were 2 left (and the previous 7 were voting for the winner), as much as Rudy disliked Rich, he still did not vote him off the island, because he, based on what became inbred in him in the Navy Seals, could not sacrifice his honor, and go back on his word.

The Knights of Medieval times, and the Navy Seals, all had honor to the extent that they would never betray, or go against, any fellow member. All it took was their word. These days we so easily give up, change direction, dishonor something for something else, that we have lost the honor we should give to our word, to our faith, to our Lord.

We need honor Christ as our Lord in the same way the Knights and Navy Seals were taught, so they will honor their Lord.

I think the primary reason why we don't obey Christ as Lord is because we have never learned to properly obey anything. We probably obey Christ in the same way we obeyed our parents. We get away with what we can, we always stretch the boundaries. We sometimes get caught, and live with the results. Our parents did not teach us to properly obey them (totally, with the heart), and we have probably not done that with our children. (Yes, this is also a cllange to parents.)

That is why the Knights and Navy Seals do so well in honor and obedience. They were taught how to obey. I bet if members of either of these groups becomes a strong Christian, they will do well in obeying Christ. We need to honor Christ as our Lord and King
