What Does the Bible Say?

Why do we call Him Jesus if His name is Yeshua?

Even though Jesus' family commonly spoke the Aramaic language, at birth He was most likely given the Hebrew name of Yeshua, meaning "Salvation". In Hebrew Yeshua is equivalent to Joshua, and we actually see the name Joshua used for Jesus (Hebrews 4:8). If you translate Yeshua into Greek, you get Iesous. Translate Iesous into English, and you get Jesus. Keep in mind that the entire New Testament comes from Greek manuscripts, and not Hebrew manuscripts like the Old Testament.

If you translated Yeshua directly from Hebrew to English, you would call Him Joshua. So, Jesus and Joshua are actually the same name, just translated from two separate languages.

So, Yeshua is Jesus' original name in Hebrew, Iesous is His Greek name in the written New Testament, and Jesus is His name translated from Greek.

  • Hebrews 4:8 — For if Joshua had given them rest, He would not have spoken of another day after that.
