What Does the Bible Say?

Why do people die?

God told Adam, the first person created, that if he disobeyed God he would die.

When God said Adam would die, He implied he would die both physically and spiritually.
Our bodies were not originally designed to deteriorate, but they do because of sin, and thus we have a physical death. Also, God created us for fellowship with Him, and when we sinned it separated us from fellowship with God, which is a spiritual death.

  • Genesis 2:17 — but from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat from it you will surely die."
  • Romans 5:12 — Therefore, just as through one man sin entered into the world, and death through sin, and so death spread to all men, because all sinned--
  • Romans 5:16-17 — The gift is not like {that which came} through the one who sinned; for on the one hand the judgment {arose} from one {transgression} resulting in condemnation, but on the other hand the free gift {arose} from many transgressions resulting in justification.
For if by the transgression of the one, death reigned through the one, much more those who receive the abundance of grace and of the gift of righteousness will reign in life through the One, Jesus Christ.
  • Romans 6:23 — For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.
