What Does the Bible Say?

What language did Jesus speak?

Jesus' main tongue is said to have been Aramaic. There are a few instances throughout the Gospels in which the English translations quote Him in this language, including the famous moment when He was hanging on the cross. While there may have been other languages He spoke as well, Aramaic seems to have been His native tongue.

  • Mark 5:41 — Taking the child by the hand, He *said to her, "Talitha kum!" (which translated means, "Little girl, I say to you, get up!").
  • Mark 7:34 — and looking up to heaven with a deep sigh, He *said to him, "Ephphatha!" that is, "Be opened!"
  • Matthew 27:46 — About the ninth hour Jesus cried out with a loud voice, saying, "ELI, ELI, LAMA SABACHTHANI?" that is, "MY GOD, MY GOD, WHY HAVE YOU FORSAKEN ME?"
