What Does the Bible Say?

What is discipleship?

"Disciple" means a learner, or a student. Discipleship is the practice of becoming more like Jesus and helping others do the same.

What is Discipleship about?
  • Focus on Christ - everything must include Him (Matt 4:18-20, Mark 8:34-38, Phil 2:5)
  • Relationships - helping each other grow in Christ (1 John 3:10) (John 13:34-35)
  • Character change - being what God wants us to be; being different than the world (Rom 12:2)
  • Repentance - recognizing failures, repenting, moving forward (Rom 7:15, 1 John 1:19)
  • Listening - paying attention to what God wants (John 8:31-32)
  • A process - it is a lifestyle, not an event (Psalms 106:3, Psalms 119:20)
  • Mentoring - the mature in Christ teaching the younger in Christ (1 Tim 1:2, 1 Cor 4:17)
  • Multiplication - teaching others so they can teach others (2 Tim 2:2
