What does it mean to be a born again Christian?
When a believer is referred to as born again, this doesn’t literally mean they were born a second time. This phrase comes from a conversation Jesus had with a Jewish leader named Nicodemus, who came to Jesus asking questions. Jesus told him, "unless one is born again he cannot see the kingdom of God."
Jesus continued, explaining that this second birth is not a second physical birth (a "water" birth), but the second birth is a spiritual birth. You must have both to enter the kingdom of God (John 3:5). Read the discussion in John 3:1-15. Jesus concluded the discussion by telling how to be born again - "whoever believes will in Him have eternal life", referring to belief in Jesus.
The state of every person without Christ is spiritually dead, because of sin. This is our nature, to sin, and our state, to be dead in sins. Without Christ, we are separated from God, with no spiritual life, and no connection to the goodness of God. We need the second birth Jesus offers to us through faith in Him.
Ephesians 2:1 — And you were dead in your trespasses and sins,
John 3:5 — Jesus answered, "Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit he cannot enter into the kingdom of God.
John 3:14-15 — ~"As Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of Man be lifted up;
so that whoever (Or {believes in Him will have eternal life}) believes will in Him have eternal life.
John 1:12-13 — But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, {even} to those who believe in His name,
who were born, not of blood nor of the will of the flesh nor of the will of man, but of God.
2 Corinthians 5:17 — Therefore if anyone is in Christ, {he is} a new creature; the old things passed away; behold, new things have come.
