Is it Wrong to Enjoy Earthly Pleasures?
"Earthly pleasures" covers a wide variety of activities, which may or may not be sinful. Throughout Scripture, we have clear guidelines of what we're supposed to partake in and what we're not. But certainly, some pleasures in the right situations are not only allowed but even encouraged (1 Corinthians 7:2-5).
Philippians 4:8 tells us that we're supposed to commit our thoughts to whatever is pure and right and noble. If whatever is in question fits that criteria, James 1:17 tells us that these things are actually blessings from God. Blessings are to be enjoyed, and not ignored or avoided. If you're in question about some activity, examine in view of Philippians 4:8.
Philippians 4:8 — Finally, brethren, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is of good repute, if there is any excellence and if anything worthy of praise, dwell on these things.
James 1:17 — Every good thing given and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shifting shadow.
1 Corinthians 7:2-5 — But because of immoralities, each man is to have his own wife, and each woman is to have her own husband.
The husband must fulfill his duty to his wife, and likewise also the wife to her husband.
The wife does not have authority over her own body, but the husband {does;} and likewise also the husband does not have authority over his own body, but the wife {does.}
Stop depriving one another, except by agreement for a time, so that you may devote yourselves to prayer, and come together again so that Satan will not tempt you because of your lack of self-control.
