What Does the Bible Say?

How to Reprove

Reproving or correcting someone else is one of the most difficult things to do as a Christian. For it to be successful, it requires the reprover to do it properly, and it requires the one being reproved to receive it properly.

What Scripture tells us:
  • When someone is struggling with sin in their life, gently talk to them about it, being wary because we too could so easily fall into sin, even the same sin. (Galatians 6:1)
  • We love someone more when we are willing to give them the honest truth about a weakness in their life, rather than hiding failures by covering them with flattery. (Proverbs 27:5, 28:23)
  • The person who avoids people who are willing to counsel or reprove them is a scoffer, unwise. (Proverbs 15:12)
  • The person who hates reproof is stupid, but he who listens to reproof becomes wise. (Proverbs 12:1, 15:32, 19:20)
  • Great problems come to those who neglect or ignore good counsel. (Proverbs 1:24-26)
  • You will be frustrated with your results if you avoid counsel, but you will succeed when you listen to multiple counselors. (Proverbs 15:22)
  • You can tell what kind of a person someone is by how they respond to correction - a scoffer, a wicked person, hates and insults those who try to help, and a wise person loves and learns from those who try to help. (Proverbs 9:7-9)
  • If you ignore what God and others try to tell you about a need in your life, after awhile you will no longer be able to hear it, and you will be broken. (Proverbs 29:1)
  • The more we are willing to help each other with honest reproof and thoughtful listening, the sharper we each become. (Proverbs 27:17)
  • It is a wise person who is willing to listen to good counsel from others. (Proverbs 1:5)
  • A rebuke is fully received by a wise person, but you can hit a fool with correction 100 times and it won't help. (Proverbs 17:10, 19:25)
  • It is a beautiful thing when good reproof is given, and the reproof is received well by the one needing it. (Proverbs 25:12)
